The temporary ruling doesn't answer key questions, like can doctors provide emergency abortions elsewhere, as most Republican-controlled states have restricted the procedure. Today's ruling simply delays a final ruling and allows the fight to continue at a lower court, whereas the Supreme Court had the opportunity to definitively say that everyone deserves access to emergency care. They passed on that opportunity and that should be a warning sign to everyone. This comes two years after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a historic change which no longer guaranteed abortion in America. Since then, 14 states have banned or severely restricted the procedure. Every year around 50,000 women in the US develop life-threatening complications during pregnancy, including sepsis or the loss of reproductive organs. Abortion has been at the heart of Joe Biden's 2024 presidential campaign as he seeks re-election this year and has been focusing on this issue to gain political advantage against the Republicans in the presidential race.
