Russian scientists are performing an autopsy on a wolf frozen in permafrost for about 44,000 years, a find they said was the first of its kind.

In one of the most remote places on earth, Yakutia, in the arctic northeast of Russia, scientists have discovered an intact wolf carcass that is approximately 44,000 years old. The frozen remains, found under thawing permafrost, belong to a male wolf believed to have been a predator during the ice age.

This find is notable as it's the first time a large carnivorous animal has been discovered frozen in permafrost. Scientists are conducting an autopsy to investigate its diet and gain insights into the mass extinction of species and ancient climate change causes. They are employing interdisciplinary research methods including radiocarbon dating, paleogenetics, and paleo diet analysis.

The collected data from such discoveries could provide valuable information on historic climate changes, potentially shedding light on the future trajectory of Earth's climate. The impact of this ancient wolf's remains on future climate predictions remains uncertain, but Yakutia's warming permafrost might reveal further important clues.

They also hope to find more causes of climate change from the ancient past. Interdisciplinary research involving various methods, radiocarbon dating, paleogenetics and paleo diet research enable us to delve deeper into the history of our planet. History is the teacher of the future. Those colossal climate changes that took place tens of thousands of years ago may tell us what awaits our planet in the near future.
