Claudia Sheinbaum, aged 61, promises to continue the work of Mexico's current populist president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She aims to expand his social programs to reduce economic inequality. Endorsed by López Obrador, Sheinbaum's critics worry she may mirror his controversial leadership style, which some view as authoritarian.

Xochitl Galvez, also 61, contrasts sharply with Sheinbaum. Growing up in poverty, Galvez is a former senator with indigenous roots and a self-made businesswoman. She is leading a coalition of three center to right parties and is vocal about issues such as rising crime, violence, and corruption. Her campaign pledges to prioritize public safety and restore resources to local authorities.

Both candidates identify as feminists, although neither has focused on women's issues or Mexico's high femicide rate in their campaigns. Regardless of the outcome, Mexico will have its first female president, marking a significant, though uncertain, change.

This under the leadership of our best president in history, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She is endorsed by President López Obrador, whose popularity remains high thanks to his social programs. Critics fear she will be the clone of a president many accuse of being authoritarian. She was chosen by the president, so there is not really a country changing power. It's a continuity of what started in 2018. Xochitl Galvez is also 61, but grew up in poverty. The former senator is noteworthy for being a self-made businesswoman with strong indigenous roots. She's really the Mexican dream of social mobility. And so it was obvious to so many, many people, starting perhaps with myself, that she was the best available candidate. Galvez is outspoken about the rise in organized crime, violence, corruption, and the enhanced role of the military under López Obrador. She's leading a coalition of three largely discredited parties from the center to the right, although she herself is not a member of any one of them. My government will have no greater priority than the safety of you and your children. That's why I will give back the resources to local authorities that this government took away. Both candidates describe themselves as feminists, yet neither one has made women's issues, or Mexico's very high femicide rate a key point in their campaigns.
