Beryl has made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane about 10 kilometers northeast of Mexico's Caribbean coast resort of Tulum with maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h.

Hurricane Beryl has made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane, striking approximately 10 kilometers northeast of Mexico's Tulum resort. The hurricane is generating maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h. Emergency response, coordinated by the Mexican government and led by President Lopez Obrador, includes the deployment of several thousand army troops and government personnel to assist with post-storm recovery.

Mauricio Villa-Dosal, governor of Yucatán, has chaired emergency meetings to ensure proper storm preparations and local safety measures. The governor has been actively involved in overseeing the safety efforts across potentially affected areas. Residents are being strongly advised to seek shelter and keep themselves and their belongings secure as Beryl continues its path inland.

In Jamaica, Hurricane Beryl previously struck as a Category 4 hurricane. Despite initial fears, the damage was less severe than anticipated. The hardest-hit areas include communities along the southern coast, notably in the St. Elizabeth region. Efforts to stabilize the electrical grid and communications network, both disrupted by the storm, are ongoing to facilitate recovery.

We have the latest now on Hurricane Beryl. That is a look at Cancun this hour. The center of the storm is now moving over the resorts and beach towns on the Yucatan Peninsula. Eric Briel is back with us from Merida. Now, Eric, Hurricane Beryl is hitting to the east of you, but it is tracking in your direction. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that. What's the latest? Well, Chris, thanks again for having us here. And I don't know if your viewers can see behind me, the rain and the wind has started. And yeah, it's just going to get worse from here out. It's pretty light at the moment. But what's happening over on the east coast of the peninsula right now, as the authorities have advised us, that Hurricane Beryl has indeed made landfall just north of Tulum. There was some wind tracking that was done by Shellha and also by NOAA, and it was showing some pretty strong winds there. So a lot of the things that we've been talking about in previous conversations here from the authorities, they're still putting out the word to anybody that has not gotten in place or sheltered to get there now. Landfall has been made, and it's coming your way. If you're inland, it's coming towards you. So everybody's being told to get themselves into their shelters, get themselves secured with their families, their belongings, and just ride it out until the storm passes over. And Eric, you've been tracking storm prep all week. Now that Beryl has made landfall, what are you hearing from Mexican officials? OK, so basically, what we've heard on the Caribbean coast, the army has been deployed to help out, basically, when the storm has passed. I believe there was several thousand army troops have been deployed out there, as well as government personnel to aid in the aftermath. The other thing that is worth noting is that President Lopez Obrador released a statement yesterday, again, asking everybody that was in the affected areas to get into shelter, which they should be doing at this point, and also reminding people that nothing is worth the risk to try and go after and save. Things can be replaced. So that was a very important point from the leader of this government here. Now in Yucatan specifically, our governor here, Mauricio Villa-Dosal, he had an extra special plenary meeting with his emergency measures team that was trying to get things in place. As we've mentioned before, Mauricio Villa-Dosal is a very involved governor that has gone out to the Pueblos to make sure that everybody is being looked after and safe in their homes in the possible and potential affected areas. As well, there are several crews and equipments that are ready to take on any challenges that are going to be posed from Beryl. And one thing that we can take into account here, if you look at the storm track and your historical storm follower, this one is very similar to Gilberto, as it's known down here, but Hurricane Gilbert that crossed over the peninsula back in 1988. It entered with Category 5 and left with the Category 2. Thank goodness we're not at that level right now, but still a very dangerous storm all the same, Chris. Stay safe, stay dry out there, Eric. Thank you so much for bringing that report for us from Mexico. And there is still a lot of recovery work to do in Jamaica after Beryl hit there. But the country's prime minister says the island was spared the worst. Based upon the category of hurricane that hit us, hit us at the Category 4, the damage was not what we had expected. And so we're very grateful for that. Communities along Jamaica's southern coast are the hardest hit, especially in the St. Elizabeth region, a key food-producing area. Damage to Jamaica's electrical grid and communications network is complicating the recovery effort.
