Several hundred supporters of Julian Assange gathered at the East Hotel in Canberra, carrying banners and flags. Some had been following Assange's saga for the past 14 years, while others had recently joined the movement. They celebrated Assange's journalistic work and his exposure of war crimes.

At the gathering, one attendee compared Assange's release to Nelson Mandela's, describing it as a monumental moment. Assange, who had been incarcerated for 15 years, was reunited with his family and embraced by his supporters. The former Deputy Prime Minister, however, criticized Assange, stating that he did not deserve a hero's welcome and had put Australian Defence personnel at risk.

During the press conference, pro-Assange sentiment was evident as questions critical of Assange were met with jeers. There were interruptions, including an attempted entry by Assange’s father, John, who claimed he got caught in the crowd and forgot about the press conference.

Today, they say they are celebrating his journalistic integrity and his exposure of war crimes. Take a listen. It's so great he's been released. It was so good. No words. Exposing war crimes is absolutely critical. You know, I lived through apartheid in London and to me this just feels a bit like Nelson Mandela being released. Julian is out of jail after 15 years incarceration. His home, his wife is here, his kids are here and he is in the embrace of the Australian people. Assange has been a polarising figure though. The former Deputy Prime Minister today saying he doesn't deserve a hero's welcome calling his behaviour disrespectful and putting the lives of Australian Defence personnel at risk. Questions along those lines were asked at the press conference and were met with jeering. It's clear that there was a lot of Assange supporters in that room and weren't interested in hearing any of that negative commentary. There was also interruptions at the press conference of several people trying to force their way into the room. One of those being Julian Assange's father, John. We spoke to him after the press conference. He said he forgot it was on as he got caught in the crowd. It certainly has been an overwhelming day for his family.
