This follows an unprecedented attack on Israel, with Yellen suggesting that further action from Washington is anticipated shortly. The European Union, represented by its foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, is also contemplating new sanctions against Iran. These considerations by both the U.S. and EU come in response to recent escalations involving Iran.



U.S., E.U. weigh new sanctions targetting Iran

Iran sent a barrage of drones and missiles into Israel over the weekend, although the strikes did little damage. The attack was a response to Israel's bombing of Iran's consulate in Damascus early this month. Now, Western countries are seeking to limit escalations of the regional conflict. Washington has been working to diminish Iran's ability to export oil. Extended sanctions will also target Iran's missile and drone program, as well as the Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian Defense Ministry. The European Union is also exploring new sanctions, planning to expand its current regime intended to hamper Iranian production of drones, to also include the production of missiles. In addition, the EU seeks to extend measures aimed at the supply of Iranian weapons to Russia to cover deliveries to proxies in the Middle East. The idea is to expand the existing Iran-Russia related drone regime. Iran has been under Western sanctions, especially those imposed by the United States, on and off for 45 years. In that time, Iran has become adept at trying to circumvent their effects through creating alternative economic relationships, notably with Russia and China.
