Gearing up for what's being described as the most important election since independence from Britain almost 50 years ago, voters in the country of three-quarters of a million are choosing local officials and electing 50 MPs, who will then select the next prime minister. Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare is seeking a second term. He's brought his country closer to China, first by severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and then by signing a security agreement that has raised fears by the U.S. and its allies of a Chinese military base there. Opposition politicians want a review of the Chinese pact. That is something that is very concerning, like the influence of the CCP in this country, like people are not really making decisions that come from their own, the way they think of things. Sogavare argues deeper ties with Beijing brings much-needed development. The Solomons was proud to host the Pacific Games in venues built and funded by China. I suppose other Pacific nations will be looking to see what the consequences are of taking a very overtly pro-China stance. I mean, of course, they're warm to the connections with China, and they like the Chinese aid projects, but they don't like the political pressures. But geopolitics is far from the minds of many voters. They say they want to see an end to vote-buying and a better quality of life. The change we want to see is a government putting people first. That is one of the main important things we want to see. People first in everything that they do. In education, in health, as well as employment.
