The airline has agreed to pay a total of $120 million, comprising a $100 million fine and $20 million in remediation to affected passengers. This decision comes after the airline was criticized for its practices, which have been described as "egregious and unacceptable".

The settlement will benefit approximately 86,000 passengers, with compensations ranging from $225 for domestic and trans-Tasman flights to $450 for international flights. This compensation is available only to customers who were sold tickets on flights more than two days after those flights were canceled. Customers eligible for the remediation will need to apply through an online portal Qantas plans to launch. The airline is committed to contacting affected customers with details on how to claim their compensation.

Under the leadership of Alan Joyce, Qantas initially planned to challenge the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) in court but has since agreed to the settlement terms. Qantas has issued an apology to its customers, acknowledging that the company let them down and is taking steps to ensure such an issue does not recur, including implementing new systems for managing flight bookings and cancellations.

This settlement follows a period where Qantas reported a half-yearly profit of $1.25 billion, which is significantly higher than the amount set aside for the settlement. Despite the controversy, Qantas assures a seamless and fast process for customers to claim their compensation, addressing concerns raised from previous issues with contacting customers over COVID flight credits. The federal court's approval is still pending for the final settlement agreement.

I think it's the least they can do and probably not enough because people had paid for hotels and it put people out. It can certainly afford it. The airline's latest half yearly profit was 10 times the settlement amount at $1.25 billion. A cancelled flight doesn't automatically mean a payment. The money is only for people who are sold tickets on flights two or more days after they were pulled and it won't come automatically. You'll have to apply. Qantas will begin contacting customers from next month with a link to an online portal. Despite a debacle contacting customers over COVID flight credits, they promise this time... It's going to be a seamless process and fast process. The federal court still has to approve the settlement. The airline's also promised new systems to make sure it can't ghost passengers again.
