Title: Privacy Breach Impacts Over 1 Million Records at New South Wales Clubs

A significant privacy breach at Engleburn RSL, alongside at least 15 other clubs in New South Wales, has resulted in the publication of part of their databases by cybercriminals online. The breach has exposed over 1 million records, causing concern and anxiety among the clubs' members, which include high-profile figures such as the Premier, the former Premier, the Police Minister, and the Deputy Premier.

The exposed data originates from license scans and club loyalty schemes, managed by a company named Outerbox. Outerbox had previously employed software developers in the Philippines, and it's suggested that a contractual dispute may have been a factor in the breach. Currently, the cybercriminals' website lists members' names, the clubs they visited, and their residential suburbs, with more sensitive information purportedly held at risk, including facial recognition biometrics and details on gaming activities.

A police strike force has intervened, managing to disrupt the website's operation, with expectations of its imminent shutdown. The origins of the data dump stem from an alleged financial disagreement between Outerbox and its overseas developers, with investigations ongoing to determine the motives, be it blackmail or an attempt to damage Outerbox's reputation. Authorities are optimistic about making arrests based on strong leads to prevent further release of information.



High-profile politicians caught up in major cyber breach

They're upsetting people, they're causing anxiety amongst members of our club. Many of their names are on this website, a searchable database of over 1 million records, among them the Premier, former Premier, Police Minister and Deputy Premier. It's very upsetting for people, for anyone to be involved in any sort of data breach. The data was lifted from licence scans and club loyalty schemes where members swipe their cards, technology managed by a company called Outerbox, which used to employ software developers in the Philippines. And it would appear that there's been some kind of contractual dispute between those parties. For now, the website is only showing people's names, the club they went to and their residential suburb, which we've blurred, but claims to be holding raw data containing facial recognition biometrics, as well as gaming databases, including addresses, birthdays, phone numbers and slot machine usage. A police strike force has already been able to disrupt it and cause it to glitch. We're confident that that website will cease to exist very soon. The trigger for all of this has nothing to do with the clubs or their members. Instead, whoever's dumped this data is blaming a dispute about an unpaid bill between Outerbox and the overseas developers. Whether that's true, well, the police are now investigating. Whether it's a blackmail of a particular company, or whether, in fact, it's just a sabotage or to ruin the company's name.
