A landmark of Copenhagen engulfed in flames after a fire broke out Tuesday morning in the old Stock Exchange building in the Danish capital. The iconic 54-metre high spire collapsed in the blaze, crashing into the street below the Burson building as shocked Danes watched. It's just a building but it means so much to us Copenhageners and every Dane, even my parents who are from the other part of Denmark, has a little miniature figure of Burson in the living room. Some passers-by leapt into action, helping to save what they could of the works of art inside the historic building. I saw that some people, maybe some also from the National Museum, was salvaging some of our most valuable paintings. These paintings are very big and heavy so I quickly went and offered my help. This is the Burson building a few years ago. Built at the start of the 17th century, it had been undergoing renovation when the fire broke out. The sort of front part of the building that is mostly destroyed and the sort of back part of the building that is perhaps slightly less damaged. But it seems clear that the damages are very, very severe. It's absolutely horrible. It's part of the story of our city, a story that we can't just leave in the sea of flames. That's why we'll do everything we can to rebuild this. Police said it was still too early to say what caused the fire and that they would be able to enter the building in a few days.
