The incident has sparked concerns about the potential impact on diplomatic relations between Australia and China. The Australian government, under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, has been working towards stabilizing relations with China, highlighted by high-level visits and dialogue between the two nations' leaders, as well as recent improvements in trade relations, such as the lifting of tariffs on Australian goods like wine. China blames Australia for mid-air military incident

China's number two man, the Premier, is coming to Australia in June and the Prime Minister has said he will raise this flare incident when he is here, which could make for some uncomfortable conversation. So now there's a response from China and it's strong language and really this comes back to the question around where this leaves Australia's relationship with China. The Albanese government has previously insisted that it's stabilising and the evidence of that is the Premier's upcoming trip here, the Prime Minister went to Beijing last year and there's also been the lifting of trade tariffs including on Australian wine that happened quite recently, but that's more on the economic side. On the security side, this flare incident suggests, Ursula, that there are problems.
