It's believed the tourists became embroiled in a bungled robbery. Four bodies were found near the trio's abandoned campsite, but are yet to be formally identified.

The investigation took a major leap forward when authorities arrested three Mexican nationals in connection with the disappearance. A pickup truck, which was used by the missing individuals, was discovered burnt out, signaling foul play. On May 4th, the search operation reached its tragic conclusion with the discovery of remains at the bottom of a well, believed to be those of the missing group, along with a fourth person, identified as a local rancher who had also been missing for several weeks. The scene of the grim discovery was near a campsite where the Australians had been staying, and it is believed that a robbery attempt escalated, resulting in the men being shot and killed.

In the aftermath, authorities have charged two brothers and a 23-year-old woman with a crime equivalent to kidnapping. However, murder charges have yet to be filed. The parents of Callum and Jake were en route to Mexico when the authorities discovered the remains believed to be their sons. They are now expected to provide DNA samples to aid in the investigation and confirmation process. The community and loved ones of those lost are left seeking answers and justice for the lives tragically cut short during what was to have been an adventurous journey.
